Cortana Forever

Thursday nights in Barcelona are restless. The city fills up with an endless list of events, and I have to say I’m a very bad citizen. It takes a lot for me to dress up and actually attend an event, specially if it’s 30ºC outside. I just feel like staying home where the sun can’t get me.

A couple of days ago though, I got an invitation from the lovely Patricia from Coolhunter Diary to attend the launch of Cortana’s new outlet, and since it seemed like a small gathering and it was sponsored by Anna de Codorniu, I managed to get myself off from the couch and go.

I know I should talk about the clothes –which are gorgeous-, but you will have to excuse me just once because I’ll be talking about the store itself: although small, it’s filled with so many wonderful and quirky details. The color palette is absolutely beautiful and what I liked the most was the combination of corny and creepy (in my eye, the best mix possible).

What do you get when you mix rose petals and severed limbs? Cortana Forever.

Coincidentally, my dress went perfectly with the theme. I love flowers! Dress: River Island. Flatforms: Mango Touch.

Where to get Pimm’s In Barcelona

One of the few things that stuck with me from my time in London was the quintessential British summer drink, Pimm’s. When my ex-flatmates offered me a glass full of fresh fruit and liqueur I couldn’t resist, I was hooked for life, and at the risk of sound like an alcoholic, I can swear I craved a glass of Pimm’s every single day of the summer.

To all of you who haven’t tried this summer elixir, I’ll describe it as sangria-gone-british, and if you haven’t had sangria, then there’s something wrong with you. The thing is that last summer I was in Barcelona doing my master’s project, and I was coming straight from London, the city where everyone keeps a red jug in their kitchen just for Pimm’s, so you would understand my astonishment when I wasn’t able to find a bottle in all of the British pubs in the Barcelona. Not one, not a drop.

I made it my mission to bring a bit of the British summer –if there is such a thing- to the Ciudad Condal, and I did my research well. I looked and asked at every pub in Ciutat Vella, and at one particular pub one particularly drunk lad led me to the place: A Taste Of Home, or also known as expat heaven.

This modest shop is located in Carrer de Floridablanca (and apparently they have one in Sitges too!) and it’s the answer to all your prayers if you’re missing, well yes, a taste of home. If you’re craving pancakes, pop-tarts, pear cider or any kind of American/British cereal you can think of, they have it. And they also had two bottles of Pimm’s, but I swear only took one. But beware my friends, the cost is not low, the prices are very elevated and not at all times worth it, but at certain moments the heat is just too much and you just want a cold glass of Pimm’s.

This year though, I knew better: after a couple of months doing my shopping at Carrefour Online, I noticed that they sold a lot of British products, and yes, they have Pimm’s. But not only do they have Pimm’s, they have it at a fair price. I have to say that I nearly cried when I saw the bottle next to the 12 cartons of soya milk and the 32 rolls of toilet paper (I found that I saved a lot of time and money buying in bulk).

So last Sunday was San Juan and it was also Andrés’ birthday, and I couldn’t think of a more perfect occasion to finally enjoy some Pimm’s. The theme for our little gathering was summer kitsch and I think we nailed it, everything was very tacky, but in a good way :)

On a trip to Andalucía I found these coasters at a gas station. I find then hilarious and amazing. Andrés hates them. The straws, cake doilies and napkins are from Tiger, my favourite shop in the world, for real. Glassware from Zara Home. Let the summer begin!

Currently Loving: Van She

If I were an instrument I would definitely be a synthesizer. I’m in love with that 80′s sound, and even though I think -I think- I listen to a lot of genres, I always keep coming back to the same stuff. I’m a routine animal for sure.

Van She is one of those bands that have the best of everything: they have that old pop sound with a new twist in it. It’s been a while since the Australian band released a record, but now -well, a couple of months back actually, but I didn’t have a blog back then- it’s here and it is awesome! I’ve been playing it non-stop for the last few months and now that it’s finally warm (or should I say boiling hot?) in Barcelona, I feel it’s the perfect summer song.

Hope you enjoy it and have a lovely week!

I find the video incredibly weird and wonderful, I really do.

The Private Space Shop

The Private Space is one of these unbelievable places you would never think of finding in the middle of Poble Nou, yet, it’s there and it exists.

Surrounded by factories and car shops, this design oasis is a unique space that acts as a printing company, a gallery and more recently, a shop. Just as everything else they do –their printing quality is the best, seriously- the shop is just as beautifully crafted as the rest of the space, and contrary to its name, it is very public.

Inside they have the prettiest books and magazines, focused mostly on design and photography, as well as the most interesting artifacts (I wouldn’t call them any other way since the purpose of most of them is just being beautiful), and just last week they won a Bronze Laus Award for best corporate identity, directed by the people over at Lo Siento Studio.

Here are some pictures of the place, although they don’t do the space any justice. It’s much more beautiful in the flesh.

I own a lot of design books and magazines, some of them I love, some of them are okay, but from time to time I find a book that shakes me to the core and truly inspires me. That’s what happened when I came across the third volume of Type Series, a book on Bodoni, the most amazing typeface ever built, in my humble opinion. It’s available on The Private Space Shop.

Ikea Frosta Hack

By now everyone must know that the cheap Frosta stool from Ikea is actually a blatant copy of the expensive Aalto, the only difference being that the Aalto chair has 3 legs instead of the 4 legs of its replica.

Obviously, I got the replica. Not because I wanted to, but because the Aalto retails at about $290 and the Ikea stool is only €6,99, even though they are made from the exact same material. I, like a lot of other people, made the cheeky move of tricking my Frosta into looking a bit more like the Aalto, so I discarded one leg and rearranged the others (this was a huge mathematical impairment for me. I had to call in Andrés for this step. Shame on me)

I also had the idea of dip dyeing the legs in my all time second favourite colour: toilet green. I used all-purpose rubber paint and it worked wonders! It looks like it has little socks on! So-damn-cute.

I bought the little cushions at Ikea as well since the stool is a bit hard on the bum (hahaha) , and even though I don’t like Ikea textiles one bit, I think these are great. I love grey; I think it’s such an underestimated hue. Kudos for grey!

I find it very rewarding to do these kind of projects, it’s great to be away from a screen for a couple of hours. ♥!
